Nobody ever showed you the brake

Imagine a car with a perfect accelerator and a brake nobody ever showed you. You'd drive fast, for a long time, with that permanent feeling of never being able to stop. That's exactly where most of us are. The accelerator you know: it's stress. The brake exists too. It's called the vagus nerve, and it's waiting for you to learn how to use it. It's actually the first diagram I draw in a session — the accelerator on one side, the brake on the other — and I've watched entire faces relax just from understanding it.

So what exactly is the vagus nerve?

It's the longest nerve in your autonomic nervous system. It starts at the brainstem, runs down along the neck, crosses the chest and reaches out to the heart, the lungs, the stomach, the intestines. Its name comes from the Latin “vagus”, the wanderer, because it roams everywhere. Its main mission: bringing the body back to calm after effort or alarm. Slowing the heart, restarting digestion, relaxing the muscles. It's the conductor of recovery.

Why your brake is seized up

The system works like a balance: on one side the accelerator, alert mode; on the other the brake, recovery mode. A life under pressure works the accelerator non-stop. The brake, for its part, doesn't wear out: it gets out of training. The less it's activated, the slower it responds. That's why “settling down in front of the TV” isn't enough anymore: the body stays tense even at a standstill, an engine idling in neutral, ready to rev up again. You know that feeling: your body is on the sofa, but something in you keeps on driving.

The breath, the most accessible pedal

Good news: the vagus nerve is directly wired to your breathing. With every slow exhale, it activates and slows the heart. It's measurable, immediate, reproducible. The breath is the only vital function you can steer: which makes it the only brake pedal available on demand. An exhale twice as long as the inhale, repeated for a few minutes, and the balance starts tipping towards calm. You don't need to believe in it for it to work: the mechanism is the same for the convinced and the sceptics alike.

Training your brake, day after day

Like a muscle, vagal tone can be trained. Three concrete avenues: practise a few minutes of long exhales every day, for instance breathe in for 4 seconds and out for 8; hum or sing — the vibrations in the throat stimulate the nerve on the way through; finish your shower with twenty seconds of cool water on your face or the back of your neck. Nothing spectacular, but a regularity that, week after week, makes your brake more responsive. It doesn't replace medical advice if a disorder has set in, but it gives the body back a capacity it had set aside.
